PARKING AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT AT THE STUDIO

The Howard Fine Acting Studio is located at Level 1, 7 Cozens Street, Brunswick. It is no more than a five-minute walk from any of the various public transport options servicing the area including buses, trams and trains. Our closest train station is Moreland Station on the Upfield Line.

Trams:

No. 6: Moreland to Glen Iris via Brunswick > City > Armadale. Disembark at stop 133: Moreland Station/Moreland Rd.
No.19: North Coburg to Flinders Street Station via Coburg > Brunswick > Parkville > City. Disembark at either Stop 27 (Brunswick Tram Depot/Sydney Rd) or Stop 28 (Moreland Rd/ Sydney Rd.

Bus: No. 501: Essendon to Ivanhoe via Brunswick > Northcote > Thornbury. Disembark at major stop 2: Moreland Station.

Train: Upfield Line. Disembark at Moreland Station.

Parking: Parking around HFAS is mostly free (please check signs carefully). There is free all day parking on Cameron Street and it’s adjacent streets, plus one and two hour parks on Cozens Street and the surrounding smaller streets. Parking on Sydney and Moreland Roads gets tricky because they are major roads and both service trams. Please be aware, the ticket inspectors are unforgiving in this area.

THE MASTERCLASS

During the Masterclass, Howard will workshop pre-prepared scenes with partnered participants. The actors will present the scenes and then Howard will provide feedback, which the participants will apply as they rework their scenes and further explore the technique.

Between each floor session there will be an approximate 10-minute change over to allow participants time to set up the next scene and for auditors to have a quick break. There will also be a lunch break of roughly 45 minutes to an hour each day. If you arrive late, we ask that you please wait outside the theatre until there is a break/scene change.

WHAT TO BRING

Be sure to bring a notepad and pen to take notes during the workshop. Howard permits audio recording of his notes, feedback and direction but does not permit video recording of his tuition or of the actors as they work. We also recommend bringing a bottle of water (notes on food below).

BUYING THE BOOK

If you would like to buy the book before (or during) the event, you can simply order it through the website and select ‘Studio Pick Up’. And then during the event, hunt down Claire Frost and she will get you a copy.

WHAT YOU’LL BE SEEING - THE MASTERCLASS PLAYS LIST

Each pair of participants has been allocated a play by Howard. From this play, participants select a scene to rehearse using Howard’s book as a guide, and it is those scenes that you will be seeing at the Masterclass. It is however recommended that auditors become familiar with the source material.

  • Last Summer at Blue Fish Cove by Jane Chambers

  • Dolores by Edward Alan Baker

  • A Taste of Honey by Shelagh Delaney

  • Waiting For Lefty by Clifford Odets

  • Search and Destroy by Howard Korder

  • Seminar by Theresa Rebeck

  • Oleanna by David Mamet

  • The Interrogation by Murphy Guyer

  • Dinner with Friends by Donald Marguilles

  • Doubt by John Patrick Shanely

  • Four Dogs and a Bone by John Patrick Shanley

  • The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

We also highly recommend that auditors read Howard’s book, ‘Fine on Acting: A Vision of the Craft’, prior to the beginning of the Masterclass in order to gain the most benefit. Copies will be available for purchase during the Masterclass

NOTES ON FOOD & PLACES TO EAT NEARBY

While you are at The Studio, please note there is strictly NO FOOD OR DRINK in the Theatre or the rehearsal rooms. You may bring bottled water. No tea or coffee can be consumed in the working spaces.

Bringing from home

We have a kitchen area with three microwaves and a fridge. You are welcome to use these. Please note that we are expecting a high attendance, which means the availability of space in the fridge and time in the microwaves may be at a premium.

Buying Food

There are many great places to eat on nearby Sydney Road. We suggest you take a wander and explore the area. There’s plenty of affordable cafes, bakeries and eateries in the immediate vicinity offering a wide range of cuisines. There is also a FoodWorks and a Metro Woolworths on Sydney Road less than a 5min walk from The Studio.
