What is Scratch Night? (And Why We Love It at Howard Fine Acting Studio Australia)
Scratch Night is a fun, spontaneous, and creatively liberating event hosted at Howard Fine Acting Studio Australia throughout the year.
Whether you’re a seasoned performer, an aspiring writer, or simply someone who loves creative expression, Scratch Night is an open invitation to step outside your comfort zone and create something fresh – all in just 90 minutes!
How Does Scratch Night Work?
At the start of the night (typically 6:30 PM for our events), our guest host reveals a surprise prompt to kickstart the evening’s creativity. From there, participants have an hour and a half to write and refine a piece inspired by the theme. There’s no pressure to be an experienced writer or actor – anyone can participate! Throughout the session, two industry guests hover, offering guidance and support to help craft each piece into something truly unique.
At 8:00 PM, the magic happens. Participants take to the stage to present their freshly written work in front of an audience in our Theatre space.
Whether it’s a monologue, spoken word poetry, stand-up comedy, or something entirely unexpected, Scratch Night celebrates all forms of artistic expression. Best of all? There’s no expectation to memorise your lines – every piece is performed as is, with a strict 5-minute time limit.
